Hwang Jung-eum Embezzlement Case: Prosecutors Seek Three-Year Sentence

Hwang Jung-eum is facing a request for a three-year imprisonment from the Jeju District Prosecutors' Office due to charges of embezzling 4.3 billion won through cryptocurrency investments.

The actress, previously associated with the group Sugar, has been accused of misappropriating approximately 4.3 billion won in company funds, with prosecuting authorities seeking a three-year prison term.

On the 21st, the Jeju District Prosecutors' Office called for a three-year sentence during the final trial at Jeju District Court's Criminal Division 2, presided over by Judge Lim Jae-nam. The charges pertain to the violation of the Act on the Aggravated Punishment of Specific Economic Crimes, specifically related to embezzlement.

Hwang faced trial for allegedly embezzling around 4.34 billion won in company funds, including about 700 million won sourced from loans obtained by Hunminjeongeum Entertainment, subsequently invested in cryptocurrency under the pretext of advance payments in early 2022.

Reports indicate that approximately 4.2 billion won of the embezzled funds were invested in cryptocurrency, while the remainder was allocated for property and local taxes and other expenditure.

The company involved is family-owned, with Hwang being the sole shareholder and the only artist under its management.

Hwang has acknowledged all accusations and is said to have reimbursed the advance payments taken from Hunminjeongeum Entertainment by June 5, with pertinent documentation submitted to the Jeju District Court.

Representatives for Hwang have requested leniency, arguing that the investments were intended for the company's growth. They claim she was not fully informed about accounting and procedural matters, believing repayment would rectify the situation. No other individuals were impacted, and full restitution has been made, prompting their appeal for consideration.

The court is scheduled to deliver the sentence at 10 a.m. on the 25th of the upcoming month.
